Soy una tonta por quererte
The new book by the author of Las malas confirms Camila Sosa Villada as one of the most powerful voices in contemporary narrative. In Soy una tonta por quererte, she brings together nine stories where the line between the real and the wondrous constantly blurs, with an imagination that moves between the intimate, the dark, and the fantastic.
In the heart of the 90s, a woman makes a living as a rental girlfriend for gay men; in a Harlem smokehouse, a Latina transvestite spends a night with Billie Holiday; a group of rugby players negotiates the price of a sex session and ends up getting what they deserve. Nuns, grandmothers, children, and dogs reveal themselves to be very different from what they seem. These characters, extravagant and deeply human, face an ominous reality from places as strange as themselves.
With an unmistakable style, Sosa Villada combines the popular and the baroque, the chronicle and the twisted fairy tale. She is capable of putting a believable old Spanish in the mouth of a victim of the Mexican Inquisition and, at the same time, creating dystopian universes where transvestite existence takes its revenge. In these stories, the author effortlessly crosses the boundaries between reality and magic, updating the oral tradition with a solid, radical, and very personal voice.
